Modified service days
Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24
- Delivery. Available for Air, International Air, Standard, and Ground packages.
- Pickup. No UPS Ground pickup. Air and International Air pickup only if prearranged by Friday, December 18. UPS On-Call Pickup is available for Air and International Air packages.
New Year's Eve, Thursday, December 31
- Delivery. Air and International Air only. No Ground delivery.
- Pickup. No UPS Ground pickup. Air and International Air pickup only if prearranged by Monday, December 28. UPS On-Call Pickup is available for Air and International Air packages.
If you count on Ground, treat both of these as non-shipping days. A Ground package that would arrive on December 31 will show up after New Year's instead.
UPS is open on these holidays
Several days that close banks or the post office are normal UPS days: Presidents' Day, Good Friday, Juneteenth, Indigenous Peoples' Day, Veterans Day, and the day after Thanksgiving.
The catch is Presidents' Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day, and Veterans Day. UPS Ground Saver and UPS Mail Innovations hand off to USPS for final delivery, and USPS is closed those days, so UPS adds one business day to those services. Our list of post office holidays shows the USPS side.
Planning holiday shipments around UPS
The holiday stretch is where closures pile up. Between Thanksgiving and New Year's 2027, UPS has three full closures and two modified days. A few habits help:
- Count business days, not calendar days. A 3 day Ground package shipped the Wednesday before Thanksgiving won't move on Thursday.
- Watch the weekends next to holidays. Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday, so a package that misses Thursday delivery may not move again until the following week.
- Don't count on Ground the week of New Year's. With no Ground delivery on New Year's Eve and a closure on January 1, Ground effectively pauses for two days.
