Surface streets the whole way

From most of Porter Ranch, take Rinaldi Street west to De Soto Avenue, go south to Lassen Street, and head west to Variel. About 4.5 miles. It is one of the shortest trips we get, so pickup almost always beats waiting for a box.

Family-sized orders

Porter Ranch is a family neighborhood. Most homes are owner occupied, and households average about three people. Schools inside its boundaries include Porter Ranch Community School and Castlebay Lane Charter School. Orders from areas like this lean toward school events and family plans, not big commercial runs.

  • Class and PTA shirts. Field trips, jog-a-thons, and spirit days, often with a different color shirt per grade.
  • Birthday and party shirts. A matching set for the family with one name swapped per shirt. See our birthday shirt ideas.
  • Youth sports. Rec league jerseys and team parent shirts, usually with a sponsor on the back.
  • Home businesses. Etsy and market sellers who press shirts in a garage and need a reliable supply of transfers.

Local designs people actually want

Neighborhood pride shirts sell. Porter Ridge Park was a filming spot for E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and in 2022 the city council backed a proposal to rename it E.T. Park. Limekiln Canyon Park is another local favorite. A simple line drawing of the hills or a park sign in your own style works great.

One caution: movie characters and studio logos are protected. Draw the place, not the alien. Our post on DTF and copyright explains where the line is.

Running a garage print shop

Plenty of people in the north Valley run a side business out of the garage with a heat press and a stack of blanks. Being a short drive from a printer helps. You can order Monday, pick up once it's ready, and fill orders the same week without holding much stock.

A few tips for that setup:

  • Buy a clamshell or swing-away press. An iron works for a one-off, but the print won't last as long on shirts you sell. Our heat press guide for small businesses compares options.
  • Keep extras flat and sealed. Unpressed transfers last 6 to 12 months stored cool, dry, and out of sunlight.
  • Gang everything. Small logos fill the gaps between big designs, so you waste less sheet.

Picking the right blank

For school and family shirts, a basic ringspun cotton or cotton blend tee is the safe pick. DTF bonds well to both. Kids' shirts are smaller, so shrink the design to fit the youth sizes instead of using one adult size for everyone. A design that looks right on an adult large can wrap into the armpits on a youth small. Size each version on the sheet before you order, and label them so they don't get mixed up at pressing time.

Dark shirts are fine too. DTF prints a white layer under the color, so bright art stays bright on black or navy.

Picking up

  1. Order in the builder. Gang sheets and single transfers by size are both there.
  2. Call (818) 527-8264. We'll confirm it's printed.
  3. Drive down to 9736 Variel Ave. Monday to Friday, 10AM to 5PM.
  4. Press at 300°F. 10 seconds, high pressure, peel hot. Our gang sheet guide covers layout before you order.

Northridge is just as close, and our Northridge page covers the college crowd there.

FAQ

How long is the drive from Porter Ranch?

About 4.5 miles on surface streets, Rinaldi to De Soto to Lassen. No freeway needed.

Can I print a design of a local park?

Yes, if the art is yours. Avoid movie characters, studio names, and logos you don't have rights to.

Will an iron work for a school shirt?

It works, but the print won't last as long as one pressed with a heat press.

Can I order different shirt designs for each grade?

Yes. Put every grade's design on one gang sheet and cut them apart.
