Hot stamping, or hot foil stamping, uses a heated metal die to press a thin layer of metallic or colored foil onto a surface. You see it on book covers, business cards, luxury packaging, leather and plastic parts. On t-shirts, the same shiny look usually comes from a foil heat transfer instead.

How hot foil stamping works
A die is a metal plate with the design raised on its surface. Dies are commonly made from magnesium, copper or brass. The die is mounted in a press and heated.
Foil runs between the die and the material. Stamping foil is a thin roll with several layers: a clear carrier film, a release layer, the color or metallic layer, and a heat-activated adhesive. When the hot die presses down, the adhesive bonds to the surface and the release layer lets go, but only where the die touches. Lift the die, and the carrier pulls away, leaving the foil design behind.
It's a dry process. No ink, no drying time.
A different "hot stamping"
In metalworking and car manufacturing, hot stamping means something else: heating steel sheets and forming them in a cooled die to make strong, lightweight parts. If you landed here for that, it's not related to foil or printing.
Where hot stamping is used
- Paper and print. Business cards, wedding invitations, greeting cards, certificates and book covers.
- Packaging. Cosmetic boxes, wine and spirits labels, candle and gift packaging.
- Leather. Notebooks, wallets, belts and patches with a debossed foil logo.
- Plastics. Caps, cosmetic containers, appliance trim and product labeling.
Hot stamping is often paired with embossing, so the foil sits in a raised or pressed-in area for a premium look.
Hot stamping vs digital foil
Digital foil methods put foil down without a custom die. Some lay foil onto printed toner with heat. Others print an adhesive pattern and apply foil over it. Cold foil, used on some label and packaging presses, applies foil with a printed adhesive and UV curing instead of a hot die.
| Hot foil stamping | Digital foil | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Custom die | Straight from a file |
| Best for | Repeat and long runs | Short runs, personalization |
| Look | Crisp, pressed in | Flat, on the surface |
| Embossing | Can combine | Usually not |
The die is the cost that matters. It's a one-time expense per design, which pays off over long runs but makes a few pieces expensive. Digital methods trade some of that pressed-in crispness for no setup.
Foil stamping vs foil DTF on apparel
Classic hot stamping isn't built for t-shirts. Rigid dies and stamping foils are made for flat, firm surfaces like paper, leather and plastic. Fabric is soft, textured and stretches, so the metallic look on clothing usually comes from heat transfers pressed with a regular heat press.
The common options:
- Foil heat transfer vinyl. Metallic vinyl that's cut, weeded and pressed. Good for simple shapes and text. Compare in DTF vs HTV.
- Foil over adhesive. An adhesive is printed on the shirt, then transfer foil is pressed on top and sticks only to the adhesive.
- Gold foil DTF. A DTF transfer with a metallic gold finish. It's printed from your file, so there's no die and no weeding.
Our gold foil DTF transfers press with the same settings as our standard transfers: 300°F, 10 seconds, high pressure, instant hot peel. Thick lines are recommended for foil designs.
How to order foil DTF
Gold foil is one of our specialty DTF finishes, along with glitter, puff and glow in the dark. A few things are different from standard orders:
- Order through the contact form. Specialty finishes aren't in the gang sheet builder.
- 3 to 5 business days. That's the production time for specialty finishes.
- Separate sheets. Specialty designs can't share a gang sheet with standard DTF.
FAQ
What's the difference between hot stamping and foil stamping?
In printing and packaging, they mean the same thing. Hot foil stamping is the full name.
Can you hot foil stamp a t-shirt?
Not with a traditional stamping die in most cases. Shirts get a foil look from heat transfers, like foil vinyl or gold foil DTF.
Is hot stamping expensive?
The die is the main setup cost, so short runs cost more per piece. On long runs the die cost spreads out.
Does gold foil DTF press differently?
No. Our specialty finishes use the same press settings as standard transfers.
Want a metallic look on shirts?
Send us your design through the contact form to order gold foil DTF. Specialty finishes take 3 to 5 business days.
