Garment Dyed: What It Means for T-Shirts

Garment dyed means the shirt is sewn first from undyed fabric and then dyed as a finished garment, instead of being cut from fabric that was already dyed. The dye and wash give the shirt a soft, broken-in feel, a slightly uneven vintage color, and very little shrinkage at home. Comfort Colors is the best-known garment-dyed blank brand.

Garment dyed vs piece dyed

Most T-shirts are made from fabric that is dyed on the roll, then cut and sewn. Every panel comes from the same dyed fabric, so the color is flat and consistent across the shirt and across the whole order.

Garment-dyed shirts flip the order. The factory knits and sews the shirt from undyed cotton, then puts the finished shirts into the dye and wash. That changes three things you can see and feel:

  • Hand feel. The wash softens the cotton, so the shirt feels broken in on day one.
  • Color. Dye settles a little differently in seams, collars, and hems, which gives a lived-in, slightly uneven look.
  • Size stability. The garment has already been through hot water and drying, so most of the shrinking is done before it ships.

Pigment dye vs reactive dye

Garment dyeing can use different kinds of dye. Comfort Colors, for example, uses two.

Pigment dye

Pigment doesn't chemically bond with cotton. It is held on the surface of the fibers with a binder. That is why pigment colors look chalky, washed, and soft, and why they keep fading gently with each wash. Comfort Colors describes its pigment colors as having a vintage look that lasts for the life of the garment, and says shade variation is normal with this process. In 2024 the brand renamed its pigment process Pigment Pure and says it uses about three times less water on average than traditional dyeing.

Reactive dye

Reactive dye forms a chemical bond with the cotton fiber. The result is deeper, more saturated, more even color that holds its shade well. Comfort Colors calls this a traditional dyed look with the same softness. On the 1717, its reactive colors include Black, White, Red, Graphite, True Navy, Midnight, and Sage.

Pigment dyed Reactive dyed
How it holds on Bound to the fiber surface Chemically bonded to the fiber
Look Faded, chalky, vintage Rich, even, traditional
Shade variation More Less
Over time Fades softly with washing Holds color longer
Comfort Colors examples Pepper, Ivory, Moss, Blue Spruce, Light Green Black, Graphite, Sage, Red, True Navy

A classic example: Comfort Colors Pepper is pigment dyed, so it reads as a washed charcoal, while Graphite is reactive, so it looks like a solid, even dark gray. Our pepper color shirt post shows the difference.

Why garment-dyed shirts shrink less

Cotton shrinks the first few times it hits heat and water. A garment-dyed shirt goes through a hot dye bath, washing, and drying at the factory, so it does most of its shrinking there. Comfort Colors says its shirts are pre-shrunk during the garment dye and wash processes for almost no shrinkage at home. You can size customers with more confidence than a standard 100% cotton tee.

Why the color varies from shirt to shirt

Each batch of finished shirts goes through the dye on its own, so small changes in time, temperature, and load show up as small changes in shade. Seams and thick areas like collars take dye differently than the flat body. That variation isn't a defect. It's the look.

  • Buy matching sets at once. Teams, wedding parties, and reunions should order all their shirts in one go to stay in one dye lot.
  • Expect neighbors, not twins. Two shirts of the same color will be close, not identical.
  • Use photos as a guide. Screens vary too, so order a sample if exact color matters.

How to press DTF on garment-dyed shirts

DTF is one of the easiest ways to decorate garment-dyed blanks. The transfer has a white ink layer behind your colors, so the print stays opaque even on uneven pigment shades. Use the same settings you'd use on any cotton tee:

  1. Pre-press 5 seconds. Heavy garment-dyed cotton holds moisture. Pre-pressing drives it out so the adhesive bonds.
  2. Press at 300°F for 10 seconds with high pressure. Thick, textured knits need full pressure.
  3. Peel hot. Peel right away in one smooth, low pull.
  4. Post-press 5 seconds with parchment or a Teflon sheet to lock it in.

Tips for garment-dyed blanks

  • Check your press with a temperature gun. A cool press is the top reason transfers lift on thick shirts.
  • Watch neons. Comfort Colors notes its neon colors are more heat sensitive. Don't run hotter than you need.
  • Match the vibe in the art. If you want the print to look as worn as the shirt, add distressing or halftones to the design.
  • Care like normal. Wait 24 hours before the first wash, wash inside out, no bleach, tumble dry low or hang dry.

FAQ

Is garment dyed better?

It's different, not better. Garment dyed gives a softer, broken-in feel and a vintage color with low shrinkage. Piece-dyed shirts give more consistent color and usually cost less.

Does garment dyed fade?

Pigment-dyed garments fade softly over time by design. Reactive-dyed garments hold their color longer.

Do garment-dyed shirts shrink?

Very little. They're pre-shrunk during the factory dye and wash. Drying on low still helps the shirt and the print last.

Can you DTF print on garment-dyed shirts?

Yes. Press at 300°F for 10 seconds with high pressure and peel hot. The white underbase keeps colors solid on any shade.
