Peel type is the setting people get wrong most. Peel a cold peel transfer hot and it tears. Wait on a hot peel transfer and the film grabs. Here's the difference and how to tell which one you're holding.
- Infynite transfers
- Hot peel
- When to peel
- Instantly
- Peel angle
- Low and slow
- Post-press
- 5 sec
The short version
| Hot peel | Cold peel | Warm peel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| When to peel | The second the press opens | After the film is fully cool | After a few seconds |
| Speed | Fastest | Slowest | Middle |
| Finish | Matte after post-press | Often glossier | Varies |
| Best for | Production runs | Fine detail on some films | Depends on the film |
What hot peel means
Hot peel film releases the ink while it's still hot. Open the press, grab a corner, and pull right away in one smooth, low-angle motion. No waiting, which is why hot peel is faster for big runs.
Every Infynite transfer is hot peel.
What cold peel means
Cold peel film needs the adhesive to set before it lets go. You press, then let the garment cool completely before peeling, usually 30 seconds to a couple of minutes. Peel too early and parts of the design lift with the film.
Why the film decides, not you
Peel type comes from the coating on the film. You can't turn a cold peel transfer into a hot peel one by changing your settings. If you're mixing transfers from more than one supplier, check each one's instructions before you press.
How to tell which one you have
- Check the supplier's instructions. This is the only sure answer.
- Test one piece. Try a slow corner peel right after pressing. If it lifts clean, it's hot peel. If the ink pulls up, let it cool and finish the peel cold.
- Don't guess on a full run. One test shirt costs less than a box of ruined blanks.
Peel problems and fixes
The film tore or ink came off with it
You peeled a cold peel transfer too early, or a hot peel transfer too late. Lay the film back down, re-press for a few seconds, and peel at the right time.
The film feels stuck
On hot peel film, you waited too long. Re-press for 3 to 5 seconds and peel immediately.
The print looks shiny
Do a 5-second post-press through parchment paper.
FAQ
Are Infynite transfers hot peel or cold peel?
Hot peel. Open the press and peel immediately.
Is hot peel or cold peel better?
Neither is better on its own. Hot peel is faster, which matters when you're pressing dozens of shirts.
Can I peel hot peel transfers cold?
It's not recommended. The film can grab as it cools.
Ready to press?
Our transfers press at 300°F for 10 seconds and peel hot. Full steps are in our DTF heat press settings.
