Heather Sapphire Color: Gildan Blue Guide

Heather sapphire is a bright, medium blue with a soft heathered texture. It's a Gildan color, and the heather look comes from a cotton and polyester blend. Think sapphire blue that's been softened a notch, with a slightly speckled, athletic feel.

What color is heather sapphire?

Heather sapphire is a clear, cheerful blue. It's brighter than navy and royal, deeper than light blue or Carolina blue, The heathering softens it, so it reads less loud than a solid bright blue.

Up close you see the mix of fibers: some take the blue darker, some lighter. From a few feet away the shirt looks like one blue with a gentle, textured surface. That's the same effect you get on any heather, just in blue.

Heather sapphire vs sapphire

Gildan also sells a solid Sapphire. The solid version is flatter and more saturated. Heather sapphire looks a bit lighter and more muted because of the texture. If you're matching a school or team blue, put both next to your color reference before ordering.

Heather sapphire vs heather royal

Heather royal is a deeper, more classic blue. Heather sapphire sits lighter and brighter. Royal says "team uniform." Sapphire says "summer camp, beach town, fun run."

Which Gildan styles come in heather sapphire?

Distributor listings show heather sapphire on these popular tees:

  • Gildan 64000 Softstyle tee. Listed with the brand's heather colors as 65% polyester and 35% cotton.
  • Gildan 5000 Heavy Cotton tee. Listed as a 50/50 cotton and polyester blend, grouped with the heather colors.

Not every Gildan style carries it. The Gildan 18500 Heavy Blend hoodie, for example, offers solid Sapphire but not heather sapphire in current distributor listings. Colors come and go, so check availability for the exact style before you plan an order around it. Our Gildan color chart covers the bigger picture.

What is heather sapphire made of?

It depends on the style. That's the most important thing to know about heathers in general: the same color name can be a different blend on a different blank.

  • Softstyle (64000): 65% polyester, 35% cotton. Lighter, smoother, with more stretch and drape.
  • Heavy Cotton (5000): 50% cotton, 50% polyester. A little sturdier feel.

Higher polyester content means the shirt dries faster, shrinks less, and feels slicker than cotton. It also means you should pay a little attention to heat, which we cover below.

Designs that work on heather sapphire

Heather sapphire is a mid value color. It's not dark like navy and not light like ash, so contrast takes a little more thought than on black or white.

  • White wins. Crisp white is the easiest, highest contrast choice. A DTF transfer has its own white layer, so it prints bright white on blue.
  • Warm brights pop. Yellow, gold, orange, and coral sit across the color wheel from blue and really stand out.
  • Navy and black work as outlines. Use them for keylines and shadows, not big fills, unless your art is mostly bold shapes.
  • Avoid mid blues and teals. Royal, turquoise, and similar shades blend into the shirt and lose detail.
  • Be careful with red. Red on blue can vibrate visually. If you need it, separate it with a white or black outline.

Pressing DTF on heather sapphire

Our DTF transfers use the same settings on cotton, poly, blends, and fleece, so heather sapphire is no different.

  1. Confirm your temperature. Check the platen is actually at 300°F, not just the dial.
  2. Pre-press for 5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
  3. Press at 300°F for 10 seconds with high pressure.
  4. Peel hot. Peel immediately in one smooth, low motion.
  5. Post-press for 5 seconds with parchment or a Teflon sheet.

Tips for poly heavy blends

  • Test one first. Polyester blends can occasionally release dye into a print under heat, which shows up as tinted whites. Press one shirt, let it sit a day, and check before you run the batch.
  • Watch for press marks. Poly blends can show a shiny box from the platen edge. A press pillow inside the shirt and a cover sheet on the post-press help.
  • Don't overdo time. More heat isn't better. Stick to the settings.

Caring for printed heather sapphire shirts

  • Wait 24 hours before the first wash.
  • Wash inside out in cold or warm water with a mild detergent. No bleach.
  • Tumble dry low or hang dry.
  • Don't iron directly on the print.
