Graphite heather is a dark, speckled charcoal gray. It's best known as a Gildan color, where the heathered look comes from a 50/50 cotton and polyester blend that mixes darker and lighter fibers. From across the room it reads as charcoal; up close you see the soft, salt and pepper texture.

What does graphite heather look like?
Picture a charcoal gray that isn't flat. Graphite heather has tiny flecks of lighter and darker fiber running through it, so the surface has depth instead of looking like a solid painted color. It sits a few steps lighter than black and a few steps darker than a classic athletic gray.
The heather effect is a fiber thing, not a print or a wash. Different fibers take dye differently, and when you knit them together you get that slightly mottled finish. That's why heathers hide lint, light stains, and wrinkles better than solid dark colors.
Graphite heather vs charcoal
Gildan also sells a solid Charcoal. Side by side, Charcoal looks smoother and more uniform. Graphite heather looks more textured and a touch more casual. If you want a crisp, clean look for a corporate logo, solid Charcoal is the safer pick. If you want a shirt that feels softer and more lived in, graphite heather wins.
Graphite heather vs dark heather
Dark heather is another Gildan gray, and people mix the two up all the time. The two are close, and on some styles they're even different blends, so don't assume they match. Lighting and screens shift both, so order a sample if the exact shade matters. We break down the other one in what color is dark heather.
Which brands use the name graphite heather?
Gildan is the brand most people mean. Distributor listings for the Gildan 5000 Heavy Cotton tee and the Gildan 64000 Softstyle tee both show Graphite Heather as a 50/50 cotton and polyester blend. It also shows up on the Gildan 18500 Heavy Blend hoodie, which is a 50/50 blend across its standard colors.
Other blank makers use similar names for dark heathered grays, but color names aren't standardized across brands. One company's graphite heather won't match another company's heather charcoal. If you're mixing brands on one order, look at the actual fabric, not just the name.

What is graphite heather made of?
On the Gildan styles above, graphite heather is a 50/50 blend. That matters for two reasons.
- It's softer and drapes differently. A 50/50 blend usually feels lighter and a little smoother than 100% cotton, and it shrinks less.
- It's not the same blend as the brand's other heathers. On the Gildan 64000, for example, most of the other heather colors are listed as 65% polyester and 35% cotton, while graphite heather is 50/50. Blends vary by style and color, so check the exact listing for the blank you buy.
Does DTF work on graphite heather?
Yes. DTF is one of the easiest ways to decorate heathers. The transfer sits on top of the fabric, it doesn't depend on the fiber content the way sublimation does, and it bonds well to cotton, polyester, and blends.
A quick word on dye migration
Dye migration is when heat pulls dye out of a garment and into the print, usually showing up as a tinted white. Polyester and poly blends are the usual suspects, and it's most common on deep, bright colors like reds. A dark gray heather is generally lower risk than a bright red poly shirt, but every blank is different. The simple move: press one test shirt, let it sit a day, and check the whites before you run the whole order.
Design tips for graphite heather
A DTF transfer has a white ink layer behind the color, so your design prints solid even on a dark shirt. What you need to think about is contrast and texture.
- Go bright or go light. White, cream, light gray, safety yellow, orange, mint, and sky blue all pop off graphite heather.
- Skip dark gray and charcoal in the art. They'll blend right into the shirt and your detail disappears.
- Be careful with navy, dark green, and maroon. They can work as accents but get muddy as main colors. Outline them in a lighter color if you need them.
- Black can work as an outline. A thin black keyline around a bright fill reads well on graphite heather because the shirt is clearly lighter than black.
- Let the texture help. Distressed and vintage art looks natural on heathers. If you want the shirt to show through, use halftones in the art instead of trying to fake it with transparency.
Thin lines and tiny text
Heathered fabric has more surface texture than a flat solid. Very thin lines and tiny type can look a little broken up by the fibers around them. Keep strokes reasonably thick and text big enough to read at arm's length, and you won't have a problem.
Pressing DTF on graphite heather
Our transfers use the same settings on cotton, poly, blends, and fleece.
- Confirm your temperature. Presses often run off from the dial. Check the platen is at 300°F.
- Pre-press for 5 seconds. Drives out moisture and flattens the shirt.
- Press at 300°F for 10 seconds with high pressure.
- Peel hot. Open the press and peel right away in one smooth, low motion.
- Post-press for 5 seconds with parchment or a Teflon sheet over the print.
Blends can show press marks from the platen edge more than heavy cotton does. A post-press with a cover sheet helps, and a heat press pillow or pad inside the shirt keeps seams from causing uneven pressure. Full details live in our DTF heat press settings guide.
Who should pick graphite heather?
- Brands that want a softer, more premium feel than a heavy cotton black tee.
- Teams and events where shirts will get worn hard. Heathers hide wear well.
- Bright, colorful art. The dark neutral base makes saturated colors look great.
- Anyone tired of black. It's dark enough to feel similar, with more character.
FAQ
Is graphite heather gray or black?
Gray. It's a dark, heathered charcoal. It can look close to black in dim light, but next to a black shirt it's clearly lighter and has visible texture.
Is graphite heather 100% cotton?
Not on the common Gildan styles. Distributor listings for the Gildan 5000 and 64000 show graphite heather as 50% cotton and 50% polyester. Always check the specific style you're buying.
Will white ink look gray on graphite heather?
Not with DTF. The transfer carries its own white layer, so whites print white. If you ever see tinting on a poly blend, that's dye migration, which is why a quick test shirt is worth it.
What colors go best on graphite heather?
White, cream, bright yellow, orange, light blue, mint, and pink all stand out. Avoid charcoal and mid grays in the art since they blend into the shirt.
