Gildan Size Chart: 5000, 2000, Softstyle and Fleece in Inches

The Gildan size chart depends on the style. The 5000 Heavy Cotton and 2000 Ultra Cotton tees run 18 inches across the chest and 28 inches long in a Small, adding 2 inches of width and 1 inch of length per size up to 5XL. Fleece runs wider and shorter: the 18000 crewneck and 18500 hoodie are 20 inches wide and 27 inches long in a Small. Every chart below is a flat garment measurement from Gildan's spec sheets as published by S&S Activewear, with a tolerance of plus or minus 1 inch.

How to read a Gildan size chart

Gildan publishes garment measurements, not body measurements. That matters. A chest width of 20 inches means the shirt itself measures 20 inches from side seam to side seam when it is flat on a table. Double it and you get a 40 inch circumference, which is the shirt, not the person wearing it. Gildan's separate body chart for the 5000 puts a Medium wearer at a 38 to 40 inch chest, so the Medium fits close with a little room.

The fastest way to pick a size is to measure a shirt you already like. Lay it flat, measure straight across just under the arms, then measure from the top of the shoulder by the collar down to the hem. Match those two numbers to the tables below. If you land between sizes, go with length for tees and width for fleece, since a hoodie that is tight across the chest rides up when you lift your arms.

Spec sheets also carry a tolerance. Gildan lists plus or minus 1 inch on chest and body length for these styles, so two Mediums from different dye lots can differ slightly. Cotton tees also tighten a bit in a hot dryer. If a customer is right on the edge, size up.

Gildan 5000 Heavy Cotton size chart

The 5000 is the classic box tee: 5.3 oz per square yard, 100% U.S. cotton in most colors, 20 singles yarn, classic fit with a rib collar and taped neck and shoulders. Ash Grey is 99/1 cotton/poly, Sport Grey and the Antique colors are 90/10, and Dark Heather, Graphite Heather, the Heather colors, Neons and Safety colors are 50/50. S&S lists 83 colors for it right now. See the full lineup in our Gildan color chart.

Size Chest width (in) Body length (in)
S 18 28
M 20 29
L 22 30
XL 24 31
2XL 26 32
3XL 28 33
4XL 30 34
5XL 32 35

Notice the pattern: 2 inches wider and 1 inch longer per size, all the way up. That makes the 5000 easy to plan a print across a size run. The cut is boxy, so the 5XL is very wide relative to its length.

Gildan 2000 Ultra Cotton size chart

The 2000 is the heavier sibling at 6 oz per square yard with 18 singles yarn, still 100% cotton in most colors. Its chest and length match the 5000 inch for inch, so the difference is fabric weight and hand, not fit.

Size Chest width (in) Body length (in) Sleeve, center back (in)
S 18 28 16 1/2
M 20 29 18
L 22 30 19 1/2
XL 24 31 21
2XL 26 32 22 1/2
3XL 28 33 24
4XL 30 34 25 1/4
5XL 32 35 26 1/2

Sleeve length here is measured from the center back of the neck, over the shoulder, to the sleeve hem. It is a useful number if you are placing a sleeve print and want to know how much flat space you have.

Gildan 64000 Softstyle size chart

The 64000 is lighter at 4.5 oz with 30 singles ring-spun cotton, and Gildan calls the cut a modern classic fit with a narrower rib collar. It adds an XS. The widths and lengths line up with the 5000 from Small up, but the lighter fabric drapes closer to the body, so it reads slimmer when worn.

Size Chest width (in) Body length (in)
XS 16 27
S 18 28
M 20 29
L 22 30
XL 24 31
2XL 26 32
3XL 28 33
4XL 30 34
5XL 32 35

Heather colors on the 64000 are 65/35 poly/cotton, which is a higher poly content than the 5000's 50/50 heathers. That changes how you press it, which we cover below.

Gildan 18000 and 18500 fleece size charts

Both fleece styles are 8 oz, 50/50 cotton/poly, with 1x1 rib cuffs and waistband that include spandex. They run 2 inches wider than the tees at every size but shorter in the body, because the ribbed waistband sits at the hip. The crewneck and hoodie share chest and length numbers. Sleeve lengths differ slightly.

Sizing your DTF print to the shirt

A size chart is also a print chart. The chest width tells you the ceiling for a front design. A common habit is to leave at least 3 to 4 inches of shirt on each side of the art, so a Small 5000 at 18 inches wide comfortably takes a 10 to 11 inch design, while a 2XL at 26 inches can carry 12 inches without looking lost. Hoodies lose some height to the pouch pocket, so keep the bottom of the art above it.

If you are printing one design across a full size run, you have two choices. Order one size that works on everything, usually 10 to 11 inches wide, or order two sizes and put the smaller one on XS and S. Both are easy to set up on a DTF gang sheet. Our DTF transfer size chart walks through standard widths and how far below the collar to place them.

For pressing, the 100% cotton colors take our standard settings without fuss: 300°F, high pressure, 10 seconds, hot peel, then a 5 second post-press. On 50/50 and 65/35 heathers and fleece, keep the press time at 10 seconds and do not add extra passes. Polyester dyes can migrate into the white ink layer with too much heat. The hoodie pressing guide covers seams, pockets and drawstrings.

FAQ

Does Gildan run small or true to size?

The 5000 and 2000 run true to their charts with a boxy, roomy cut. Most people who wear a retail Medium are happy in a Gildan Medium. The 64000 Softstyle uses the same numbers but the lighter fabric hugs more, so people between sizes often size up in Softstyle.

Is the Gildan size chart in inches or centimeters?

The U.S. spec sheets distributed by S&S Activewear list inches. Every measurement is taken with the garment laid flat, so chest width is half the shirt's circumference.

Do Gildan shirts shrink?

The cotton styles are preshrunk, but cotton can still tighten up a little in a hot dryer. Washing cold and tumble drying low keeps a shirt close to its spec. The 50/50 fleece shrinks less than all cotton.

Why does my Gildan measure slightly different from the chart?

Gildan publishes a tolerance of plus or minus 1 inch on chest and body length for these styles. Small variation between production runs is normal and within spec.
